Fahrenheit 451

Questions for Part 2:

1. In the scene where Mildred and Montag read books together, what are their separate reactions?
Mildred is just scared, really. She doesn't want the firefighters to burn everything in their house, because that means no more parlor. Montag just wants Mildred to understand why he has the books.

2. What is the effect throughout sections I and II, of the bombers flying over?
It creates a sense of fear. People are fearing war, similar to how Montag fears anyone finding out about the books he has.

3. Who is Professor Faber?
Ye ol' dude Montag encounters at a park, I believe. They both read books illegally.

4. Montag’s reaction to the commercial on the subway is a turning point in his life. How does he react and why?
He just gets really angry, because I think now he realizes how much attention society is paying to things that really don't matter, like technology and not becoming educated through reading.

5.What argument does Faber make for books?
Faber States that books have "quality".He means they are a reflection of real life and they speak of both the godness & evils of humanity.

6.What is the “small green metal object”?
It's essentially a Bluetooth device that Montag will use to communicate with the firemen.

7.What does the White Clown show lead you to believe about television programming in this society?
It shows me how empty society really is. Everyone is just so caught up in unimportant things. Everyone is alike and no one dares to be different.

8.Why does Mrs. Phelps cry when Montag reads “Dover Beach”?
The poem actually touched her. The poem resonated with her, and it was a different experience because she's so used to technology and all that crap. She's never had the opportunity to read a poem like "Dover Beach".

9.What is Montag’s destination at the end of section II? Why?
His own home. Someone turned him into the fire department, therefore all his books will be burned.
